An Introduction to CrossFit for the Physical Therapist
Course Description: CrossFit is a popular strength and conditioning program utilized by many people, including individuals seen in physical therapy. Given the growth of CrossFit, it is crucial that physical therapists not only are aware of the program, but also able to understand common movements and exercise principles used in CrossFit. Knowledge of these movements and principles will aid physical therapists in determining if it safe for their patient to adopt or return to the CrossFit program.
Follwing this course, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize and understand how to perform common weightlifting movements used in CrossFit.2. Recognize and understand how to perform common gymnastic movements used in CrossFit.3. Recognize and understand how to perform common monostructural movements used in CrossFit4. Understand basic principles of CrossFit programming, including variability, functional movements, intensity, and scaling.5. Help patients select an appropriate facility/timeframe if they are interested in exploring or returning to CrossFit.
Faculty
Judy Gelber, PT, DPT, OCS graduated from Washington University in St Louis, program in Physical Therapy in 2007. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy and Neurology at Washington University in Saint Louis, program in Physical Therapy. Judy’s clinical practice and teaching emphasis are in Orthopedics, with a special interest in foot/ankle pain and gait. Judy is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a CrossFit Level 1 trainer. She is a member of the Committee of Content Experts for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) in Orthopedics, and is a board member in the Foot and Ankle Special Interest group within the Orthopedic Section of the APTA. She also enjoys involvement on the boards of the EDMPTA and MPTA.
Taylor Streid, PT, DPT graduated from Saint Louis University program in Physical Therapy in 2015. She works at TheraPlus Physical Therapy in Brentwood, Missouri with a practice emphasis in orthopedic and sports physical therapy with clients ranging from eight to eighty-eight years of age. Taylor swam competitively for fifteen years qualifying for the USA Swimming Nationals three times. After completing her swimming career at Saint Louis University, Taylor discovered CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting and has competed at the regional level. She is working on qualifying for the CrossFit Games and the US Weightlifting American Open.
