Gait Deviations and Rehabilitation Strategies for Individuals with Diabetes: Current Evidence and Innovations in Practice

Wednesday, July 23, 2025

8:00-10:00pm

Participants may earn .2 CEUs or 2 contact hours of CE.

Course Description:

This 2-hour course, offered for continuing education units (CEUs) by the California American Physical Therapy Association, will provide physical therapists with an in-depth understanding of gait deviations in individuals with diabetes and evidence-based rehabilitation strategies. The course will focus on key gait deviations, including those caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), and explore task-oriented rehabilitation methods, strength training, balance training, and innovative AI-enhanced rehabilitation tools. Attendees will learn how to apply cutting-edge, patient-centered rehabilitation strategies to improve mobility, enhance safety, and restore functional independence in patients with diabetes.

Course Objectives:

Following this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the common gait deviations in individuals with diabetes, particularly those with DPN.
  • Analyze task-oriented rehabilitation strategies for improving functional gait in diabetic patients.
  • Apply strength and balance training techniques to address specific gait impairments in diabetes.
  • Explore the role of AI and wearable technology in enhancing gait rehabilitation and monitoring in diabetic populations.
  • Utilize evidence-based approaches, including orthotic devices and NMES, to support patients with gait deviations due to diabetes.

Schedule:

July 23rd

8:00 – 10:00 p.m.    Presentation and Q&A

Speaker:

Hoda Salsabili, PT, PhD

Dr. Hoda Salsabili, PT, PhD is a leading expert in AI-driven rehabilitation, with dual PhDs in Physical Therapy and Human Motion Control from Purdue University. She has dedicated over a decade to researching and practicing diabetes neuropathy rehabilitation, publishing highly cited studies on gait and postural rehabilitation in individuals with diabetes.

Dr. Salsabili completed two postdoctoral fellowships – one at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab and another at Purdue University, where she focused on AI applications in diabetes rehabilitation. Her work has been instrumental in integrating artificial intelligence into rehabilitation to enhance patient outcomes.

Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Samuel Merritt University, where she educates Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students on the use of AI for patient tracking and care enhancement. She also leads research on implementing AI to monitor and improve diabetes rehabilitation outcomes.

As the CEO and Founder of HEMSCAP, Dr. Salsabili pioneers AI-powered solutions for tracking patient exercises, performance, and progression. Under her leadership, HEMSCAP has developed PivotalPT, an advanced AI platform designed to optimize rehabilitation and clinical efficiency.

With a deep passion for innovation, research, and patient-centered care, Dr. Salsabili continues to bridge the gap between technology and rehabilitation, shaping the future of AI-driven healthcare.
