Presenter Bio's:
Kelly Stephens is the Assistant Director of Clinical Education and assistant teaching professor at the University of Missouri. She completed her bachelors in Fitness and Nutrition, 1999, and her Masters in Physical Therapy in 2001, both at the University of Missouri. Since graduation Kelly has worked in inpatient, outpatient orthopedics and pediatrics, and home health pediatrics. She has spent time working in a smaller community treating a wide variety of patient populations. Kelly has been using manual treatments for the orthopedic and chronic pain population that include: myofascial release, cranio sacral, gua sha, muscle energy, strain counter strain and therapeutic taping. This course will introduce the participants to the background and practical use of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and therapeutic taping.
This course will include lecture to gain understanding of the two techniques as well as time for practice. Each participant should dress in sports bra, shorts and T-shirt/tank tops, to allow access to areas to practice treatment.
Course Objectives
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization:
- Participants will gain understanding of how to use the tools
- Participants will understand the precautions/contraindication and indications
- Participants will learn how to provide patient education for pre-treatment and post treatment care
- Participants will gain ability to practice several different mobilization techniques on different areas of the body.
Therapeutic taping:
- Participants will gain understanding of the use of taping
- Participants will understand the precautions/contraindications and indications for use
- Participants will learn how to provide patient education on benefits and use/care
- Participants will understand the corrective taping and the physiological effects of taping
- Participants will gain ability to properly apply several taping techniques on parts of the body previously treated with instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization.
