PURPOSE
The Missouri Chapter of the American
Physical Therapy Association (MPTA)
encourages and supports clinical research
involvement by members throughout the
state. It is the intent of the
MPTA to provide funding to research
that enhances the profession of physical
therapy. This includes but is
not limited to research related to:
*Physical therapy examination, diagnosis,
and intervention
*Patient outcomes
*Delivery of physical therapy services
*Mechanism of injury
*Education of physical therapists, physical
therapist assistants, patients, family,
and the community.
The MPTA supports
the Clinical Research Agenda established
by the American Physical Therapy Association
and encourages grant applicants to
use this document as a guide to identification
of critical research questions. The
Clinical Research Agenda is published
in Physical Therapy
Journal, May 2000 Vol. 81(5).
APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY
Eligible grant applicants include physical
therapists (PTs) and physical therapist
assistants (PTAs) who are licensed
in Missouri and members of the MPTA. Students
who are members of the APTA must have
a PT or PTA who meets these criteria
as co-investigator. Applicants
with limited research experience are
encouraged to find an appropriate mentor
and/or co-investigator.
GRANT AMOUNT
The limit of an award is $5000.00 per
grant period. The Board of Directors
of the MPTA will determine the number
of grants to be awarded each year. 75%
of the funds will be provided upon
approval of the grant, 25% upon receipt
of the interim report. All or a portion
of the final 25% of the grant will
be forfeited if the interim report
is not received by the established
deadlines or if the recipient does
not request an extension prior to the
due date for the interim report. Exceptions
to the above grant distribution plan
will be evaluated on an individual
basis.
GRANT PERIOD
The maximum grant period is 2 years. Funded
projects should be completed within the
grant period.
USE OF FUNDS
Funds may be requested to meet any of
the following types of expenses reasonably
associated with the research project,
including purchase or rental of equipment,
supplies, publication costs, printing
or postage, and special services such
as photographic services and secretarial
or research assistant support. Support
for purchases of major pieces of permanent
equipment is limited to 50% or less of
the total award. Any equipment
purchased with grant funds shall be donated,
upon completion of the research study,
to the school or institution where the
research study is conducted.
The use of grant funds is restricted
to actual expenses of the research study
and may not be used for administrative
overhead of the sponsoring institution
or to provide salary or fringe benefits
for investigators. Grant funds may not
be requested or used for preparation
of a grant application; or preparation
of a presentation for, registration for,
or travel to meetings where the recipient
will present the findings of the research
study.
Recipients shall
agree to return grant funds if the
research study is not completed or
is substantially changed from the research
study as described in the application. If
the recipient is unable to complete the
research study, he/she may request a
transfer of the grant to another principal
investigator who is willing to meet all
requirements outlined in this grant application.
Funds granted for research of students
enrolled in a physical therapist professional
education program will be made payable
only to the educational institution.
DETERMINATION OF AWARDS
Proposals will be evaluated by a Grant
Review Committee. The Grant Review
Committee will include 1-2 content
experts and a Chairperson of the Research
Committee. Members of the Research
Committee, Grant Review Committee,
and/or Board of Directors who are applying
for a grant are not eligible to review
grants or attend any meeting at which
awards are determined. The
Research Committee will make recommendations
to the Board of Directors who will
make the final awards.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS
Criteria for evaluation and awards are
established by the Research Committee
of the MPTA and approved by the Board
of Directors. The Grant Review
Committee will take into account the
following criteria:
Justification: The
topic is relevant to physical therapy
and makes a potentially important contribution
to the body of knowledge and practice
in the State of Missouri. The proposal
addresses the priorities of the MPTA.
A conceptual framework for the project
is evident
Methods: The
hypothesis, purpose or question, measurements,
design and analysis are adequately developed
and appropriate to meet the goals of
the project.
Subjects: There
are clearly defined and ethical criteria
for subject selection appropriate to
meet goals of the project. The
investigators have realistic expectations
for subject availability and ample sample
size.
Budget and Logistics: The
budget is appropriate, well documented,
and sufficient for completing the proposed
project. There is evidence of support
of the investigators by the institutions
where the project will be conducted,
both in terms of necessary physical facilities
and time. The project can reasonably
be completed in the proposed time frame.
Clarity: The
proposal’s goals and methods are written
in a clear and concise manner.
HUMAN SUBJECTS POLICY
All proposals must include evidence of
approval by a human subjects committee
or institutional review board in the
facility (or facilities) where human
subjects will be involved.
DEADLINES AND NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS
Proposals should be submitted to the
chairperson(s) of the Research committee
by March 1, 2007. Applicants
will be notified by mail of the status
of their application within 2 months
of the application deadline.
PAYMENT OF FUNDS
Funding will be sent directly to a designated
official of the organization/institution
identified by the primary investigator.
CONDITIONS OF THE AWARDS
A timetable will
be established when the grant is approved
outlining when the interim and final
reports are due. At
the time of approval 75% of the grant
funds will be provided. Upon timely receipt
of the interim report, the remaining
25% of the grant funds will be provided. A
final report is due 30 days following
the projected completion dated listed
in the application.
The interim report
should describe the progress your study
has made toward your research objectives
as defined by your project (see interim
report form). The
final report should describe the study’s
outcomes in the form of an abstract or
description and plans for dissemination
of the results (see final report form). Investigators
are expected to present their results
as a poster or platform at an MPTA conference,
and are strongly encouraged to present
their results at other professional meetings.
If the investigator is unable to complete
the research study in the projected time
frame, a request must be made for an
extension on or before the report deadline.
The extension may not exceed one year
following the original date of completion
unless justification satisfactory to
the Grant Committee is provided. If it
is not possible for the investigator
to complete the research study, the unexpended
funds
must be returned to the MPTA.
If the research study is published,
a reprint should be sent to the MPTA.
The following must appear on any report,
abstract, or other publication regarding
the research study:
"Supported by a grant (or `in part') from (or `by') the Missouri Physical
Therapy Association."
As a condition of acceptance of this
award, the Grantee shall indemnify and
save harmless the Missouri Chapter of
the American Physical Therapy Association,
or its officers and all other assigns
or successors against all actions, claims,
demands, judgments, liabilities and costs,
including attorney's fees, arising out
of activities associated with this grant.
