Course Description: This course was designed for Occupational Therapists/COTAs, Physical Therapists/PTAs, SLPs, and others who work with the geriatric dementia patient. We present a paradigm shift in which clinicians move from an impairment based practice to abilities-based to facilitate the improvement in function, safety and quality of life needed for Medicare reimbursement. Participants learn how to evaluate and treat cognitive dysfunction using the esteemed Allen Cognitive Disabilities theory, Theory of Retrogenisis, and to adjust all aspects of the clinical path, treatment plan, and documentation based on the patients cognitive stage. Participants are taught how to adjust communication approach, activities and the environment to facilitate successful participation and outcomes.

This course also includes interdisciplinary training elements. Include your nursing and activity team members to facilitate continuity of care and follow through.

Ortiz, PhD, for two days packed with information on neuro-developmental disorders with special focus on ADHD, Dyslexia, Asperger’s Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorders and High-Functioning Autism. Participants will be introduced to a variety of neuro-developmental disorders including Savantism, Hyperlexia, Williams Syndrome, Synesthesia, and Angelsman’s Syndrome along with Dr O’s practical, effective strategies for identifying and addressing many of the challenges encountered by children, adolescents and adults with Asperger’s, NLD and High-Functioning Autism. These workshops reflect ongoing research and clinical findings involving these populations and draw from multi-therapeutic and multimodal disciplines. Dr. Ortiz is a licensed psychologist and dedicated practitioner deeply invested in current research, promoting education and serving children diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome & Autism and their families.
