ࡱ> EGD@ 'jbjb&& FDDu!l|||||||8H\4,(e ,0 P |C"e||a||@@||||]||]/]]d]  ] Missouri Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association Research Grant Program Information for Grant Applicants Deadline for Receipt Of Application: April 14, 2008 PURPOSE The Missouri Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) encourages and supports clinical research involvement by members throughout the state. It is the intent of the MPTA to provide funding to research that enhances the profession of physical therapy. This includes but is not limited to research related to: *Physical therapy examination, diagnosis, and intervention *Patient outcomes *Delivery of physical therapy services *Mechanism of injury *Education of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, patients, family, and the community. The MPTA supports the Clinical Research Agenda established by the American Physical Therapy Association and encourages grant applicants to use this document as a guide to identification of critical research questions. The Clinical Research Agenda is published in Physical Therapy Journal, May 2000 Vol. 81(5). APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY Eligible grant applicants include physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) who are licensed in Missouri and members of the MPTA. Students who are members of the APTA must have a PT or PTA who meets these criteria as co-investigator. Applicants with limited research experience are encouraged to find an appropriate mentor and/or co-investigator. GRANT AMOUNT The limit of an award is $5000.00 per grant period. The Board of Directors of the MPTA will determine the number of grants to be awarded each year. 75% of the funds will be provided upon approval of the grant, 25% upon receipt of the interim (1 year) report. All or a portion of the final 25% of the grant will be forfeited if the interim report is not received by the established deadlines or if the recipient does not request an extension prior to the due date for the interim report. Exceptions to the above grant distribution plan will be evaluated on an individual basis. GRANT PERIOD The maximum grant period is 2 years. Funded projects should be completed within the grant period. USE OF FUNDS Funds may be requested to meet any of the following types of expenses reasonably associated with the research project, including purchase or rental of equipment, supplies, publication costs, printing or postage, and special services such as photographic services and secretarial or research assistant support. Support for purchases of major pieces of permanent equipment is limited to 50% or less of the total award. Any equipment purchased with grant funds shall be donated, upon completion of the research study, to the school or institution where the research study is conducted. The use of grant funds is restricted to actual expenses of the research study and may not be used for administrative overhead of the sponsoring institution or to provide salary or fringe benefits for investigators. Grant funds may not be requested or used for preparation of a grant application; or preparation of a presentation for, registration for, or travel to meetings where the recipient will present the findings of the research study. Recipients shall agree to return grant funds if the research study is not completed or is substantially changed from the research study as described in the application. If the recipient is unable to complete the research study, he/she may request a transfer of the grant to another principal investigator who is willing to meet all requirements outlined in this grant application. Funds granted for research of students enrolled in a physical therapist professional education program will be made payable only to the educational institution. DETERMINATION OF AWARDS Proposals will be evaluated by a Grant Review Committee. The Grant Review Committee will include 1-2 content experts and a Chairperson of the Research Committee. Members of the Research Committee, Grant Review Committee, and/or Board of Directors who are applying for a grant are not eligible to review grants or attend any meeting at which awards are determined. The Research Committee will make recommendations to the Board of Directors who will make the final awards. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS The application form can be obtained at  HYPERLINK "http://www.mopt.org" www.mopt.org. Criteria for evaluation and awards are established by the Research Committee of the MPTA and approved by the Board of Directors. The Grant Review Committee will take into account the following criteria: Justification: The topic is relevant to physical therapy and makes a potentially important contribution to the body of knowledge and practice in the State of Missouri. The proposal addresses the priorities of the MPTA. A conceptual framework for the project is evident Methods: The hypothesis, purpose or question, measurements, design and analysis are adequately developed and appropriate to meet the goals of the project. Subjects: There are clearly defined and ethical criteria for subject selection appropriate to meet goals of the project. The investigators have realistic expectations for subject availability and ample sample size. Budget and Logistics: The budget is appropriate, well documented, and sufficient for completing the proposed project. There is evidence of support of the investigators by the institutions where the project will be conducted, both in terms of necessary physical facilities and time. The project can reasonably be completed in the proposed time frame. Clarity: The proposals goals and methods are written in a clear and concise manner. HUMAN SUBJECTS POLICY All proposals must include evidence of approval by a human subjects committee or institutional review board in the facility (or facilities) where human subjects will be involved. DEADLINES AND NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS Proposals should be submitted to Carol Kemna at  HYPERLINK "mailto:ckemna@bardgett.net" ckemna@bardgett.net by April 14, 2008. Applicants will be notified by mail of the status of their application within 2 months of the application deadline. PAYMENT OF FUNDS Funding will be sent directly to a designated official of the organization/institution identified by the primary investigator. CONDITIONS OF THE AWARDS A timetable will be established when the grant is approved outlining when the interim and final reports are due. At the time of approval 75% of the grant funds will be provided. Upon timely receipt of the interim report, the remaining 25% of the grant funds will be provided. A final report is due 30 days following the projected completion dated listed in the application. The interim report should describe the progress your study has made toward your research objectives as defined by your project (see interim report form). The final report should describe the studys outcomes in the form of an abstract or description and plans for dissemination of the results (see final report form). Investigators are expected to present their results as a poster or platform at an MPTA conference, and are strongly encouraged to present their results at other professional meetings. If the investigator is unable to complete the research study in the projected time frame, a request must be made for an extension on or before the report deadline. The extension may not exceed one year following the original date of completion unless justification satisfactory to the Grant Committee is provided. If it is not possible for the investigator to complete the research study, the unexpended funds must be returned to the MPTA. If the research study is published, a reprint should be sent to the MPTA. The following must appear on any report, abstract, or other publication regarding the research study: "Supported by a grant (or `in part') from (or `by') the Missouri Physical Therapy Association." As a condition of acceptance of this award, the Grantee shall indemnify and save harmless the Missouri Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association, or its officers and all other assigns or successors against all actions, claims, demands, judgments, liabilities and costs, including attorney's fees, arising out of activities associated with this grant.
